Some people may remember being introduced to a variety of books at a local library when they were children. As they grew older, they may have used the library as a quiet place to study, to check out books or use the computers to search the internet or check email.

From novels to reference books, auditory books to compact discs, computer access to study rooms, the RAF Lakenheath Library offers many more services than one may imagine.

"Library services are aimed at increasing the opportunity for our Liberty Warriors and their families to explore and study," said Kathleen Hanselmann, Library Director at RAF Lakenheath. "By providing exposure to a full spectrum of resources and programs, the base library assists in broadening horizons, educating and giving individuals the chance to become lifelong learners."

The base library has books for all ages. They offer a wide variety of materials including popular reading titles and free paperback book exchanges. Other print materials include magazines, newspapers, pamphlets and maps. Magazine and newspaper articles on microfiche may be viewed. Books on cassette or DVD, videotapes and compact disc are available for check out. There is a room dedicated to children's books with story time each Thursday at 10 a.m.

"The library is a great place to go for useful reference materials as needed for training. There is also a large magazine area with a great selection," said Airman Amanda Blair, Aircraft Structural Maintenance Apprentice, 48th Equipment Maintenance Squadron.

Visitors can access the Internet and other office-related software on the 26 computers available. The library is equipped with wireless internet, and electrical outlets are also available if needed. There are also two printers available.

The library provides a reference service such as interlibrary loan and research databases. If a certain book or article is needed, but not available on site, the library staff can access the interlibrary loan system. The system is a network of libraries that lend and borrow available resources. The base library has 16 different databases that are only accessible through the library staff. These databases are for individuals who need to research information that is not accessible via the internet.

A large conference room and individual study rooms can be reserved. Resources from different colleges based at RAF Lakenheath as well as CLEP material are also available. There is a copier service for .10 per page and a fax service for .50 per page for international faxes and .10 per page for United Kingdom numbers.

The library is located in building 907, next to the base gym. For more information, contact the RAF Lakenheath library at 226-3713.
