The 101 Critical Days of Summer began May 25, and is an Air Force wide campaign developed to counter the increase in mishaps and fatalities occurring every year during the summer months.

Traditionally, mishaps increase during the summer due to travel associated with vacationing and increased participation in recreational events.

"The primary goal for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and the 48th Fighter Wing during this year's 101 CDS is simple - zero fatalities," said Maj. Dave Allen, 48th Fighter Wing chief of safety.  "The 48th Fighter Wing can achieve its 101 CDS goals as long as each individual makes a commitment to safety and realizes that they have a direct role in accomplishing our goals."

Additionally, the 48th FW has set the following goals:

- Zero class A and B mishaps. A Class A mishap is defined as a fatality or damage greater than $1,000,000.  Class B mishaps include permanent injury, damage greater than $200,000 or mishaps resulting in three or more personnel hospitalized more than one day.

- Reduction of Class C mishaps by 25 percent. A Class C mishap includes incidents causing more than $20,000 or more in damage or one person missing one day of work.

- Reduction of private motor vehicle and sports or recreational mishaps (also called Class D mishaps) by 25 percent.

- Remain in DUI condition green, which requires three or less DUIs within the last 90 days.

During last year's 101 CDS, USAFE experienced three fatal mishaps. Over the past three years, private motor vehicles and motorcycles have accounted for 70 percent of the fatalities in USAFE during the 101 CDS.

"The loss of any life due to a mishap is tragic, especially when it could easily be avoided by driving safely for conditions, keeping your speed down and most importantly, wearing your seatbelt," said Major Allen.

According to wing leadership, the key to accomplishing these goals is planning -- and planning ahead.

"The first step in preparing for any trip is adequate planning. Traveling can be a great adventure, but irresponsible behavior and not planning appropriately can bring your vacation to a screeching halt," said Brig. Gen. Robert Steel, 48th FW commander, in his commander's forum kicking off the Liberty Wing's 101 CDS campaign May 18.

"This summer, be a good wingman, be a responsible driver and above all else, be safe," Major Allen added.
