Getting to RAF Lakenheath

All personnel travelling to Lakenheath will arrive either at London Heathrow or Gatwick airport. There are no more AMC direct flights to any UK bases. Inbound personnel can travel to the base by a variety of methods to suit their needs.

Airport Shuttle

One of the main sources of travel to Lakenheath is the airport shuttle, which offers DoD civilians and military ID cardholders transportation from either airport.

Those traveling on orders have seating priority. Space Available seating is available for ID Cardholders traveling without orders.

Members can find out more about shuttle schedules by contacting their sponsor or the RAF Lakenheath Airman & Family Readiness Center. Additionally, the information desks, denoted by a sign with a white letter "I" on a black background, in both airports can give you pick-up times and directions to the pick-up locations.

More helpful information is available at the Air Force Crossroads website www.afcrossroads.com under the "RAF Lakenheath/Location/Base Transportation" directory.

Private coach and taxis

If the airport shuttle cannot meet you needs, you may use a local taxi service and file for reimbursement. Be advised that some taxi companies may have 1-2 hour dispatch times. Recommended companies and their phone numbers can be found within the schedule at the link above.

Private national coach (bus) services are also available at a small cost and reimbursable too. In particular, National Express operate a service between both airports and the town of Mildenhall, located within 5 miles of Lakenheath.

Train Service

The nearest train station is the Lakenheath Station located approximately five miles from the base. However, train stations at Cambridge, Ely, Bury St. Edmunds, Brandon and Thetford are within a 45 minute drive and have more frequent stops.

Train service to the RAF Lakenheath area requires two or three stops and train changes so you may not want to take the train when you first arrive in the UK.
