The 48th Fighter Wing recently completed a surge of flying operations from RAF Lakenheath.

Between Aug. 7 and Aug. 16, the 493rd Fighter Squadron completed 158 sorties and 158.8 flying hours, while the 494th Fighter Squadron completed 235 sorties for 244 hours.

Operations such as these help both aircrew and support personnel on the ground to meet essential and time-sensitive training requirements and are necessary to ensure and maintain a ready and capable force.

Col. Evan Pettus, 48th Fighter Wing commander, said he appreciates the support from the local community during times of increased flying activity.

“We have a great relationship with our host nation partners and community members,” he said. “They understand the importance of these operations, even when the skies get a bit louder than usual.”

Routine flying operations, where a fighter squadron here typically flies about 14 sorties a day, resumed at RAF Lakenheath Aug. 17.
