As part of its first-ever visit to Europe, the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program brought Ambassadors and team members to RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall to share their experiences with Airmen and explain how the program benefits wounded warriors, July 15-16, 2019.

The program, which falls under Air Force Personnel Command, is headquartered at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. Its mission is to assist wounded, ill and injured service members, their caregivers and families to navigate the recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration process. Air Force Wounded Warrior is a Congressionally-mandated, federally-funded program.

“We help Airmen navigating everything from combat-related issues to cancer,” said Brad Britt, the AFW2 outreach program manager.

Beau Jones, AFW2 Recovery Care Coordinator, facilitates the program for all U.S. Airmen assigned to RAF installations in the United Kingdom.  His office is located at the MPF building on Lakenheath.

“To me, seeing people in difficult times, and seeing them continue to improve and give them that hope is the best part of the program,” said Jones.

During the visit, AFW2 ambassadors engaged in resiliency-based briefings with Airmen, sharing their personal stories and how they became warriors.

“The people in this program believed in me when I didn't have the power or ability to believe in myself, and now it's my privilege, my honor and my passion to turn around and pour that into other people,” said Hannah Stolberg, retired Senior Airman, and AFW2 ambassador and athlete who competed in two Department of Defense Warriors Games and the Invictus Games.

While in England, AFW2 ambassadors and team members also held briefings at RAF Croughton and RAF Alconbury.

“The goal of this visit was to get the word out to as many Airmen as possible across the command,” said Jones. “It’s an extra layer of tools that Airmen can use whether they are qualified for the program or not.”

From July 21 to 26, the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program is hosting its first Warrior Care event at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. The program will bring reality to resiliency by showcasing adaptive sporting events, resiliency training and opportunities for wounded warrior ambassadors to engage with Airmen and community members.
