A taxing situation Published March 6, 2012 By Staff Sgt. David Dobrydney 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- With tax season once again in full swing, Airmen across the 48th Fighter Wing are turning to the Liberty Tax Center for their filing needs. The Liberty Tax Center processed 1,700 tax returns during the 2010 tax season, saving customers $292,000 in preparation and filing fees. Since opening Jan. 30, more than 550 customers have used the center. It is staffed by 20 volunteers, all of whom have undergone training from the Internal Revenue Service. "The volunteers have just been fantastic this year; we've never had this many," said Dana McCrea, Liberty Tax Center site coordinator. Master Sgt. Kasey Gibbs, 48th Medical Group self-inspection manager, volunteered for the first time this year after filing his own taxes. "Because it can be so difficult, I thought 'who wouldn't like some help?'" Gibbs said. Gibbs added that the knowledge he gains assisting others' taxes would also help when he files his own. "It's sort of like learning a different language," he said. The tax center is open to all active-duty military members, Department of Defense civilian employees, retirees and dependents. To schedule an appointment, customers must submit a questionnaire via e-mail to determine approximately how long their appointment might last. Customers are also reminded to bring all of their documents such as Social Security cards, banking information and last year's tax return. For more information about the Liberty Tax Center or to request a questionnaire, send an e-mail to 48fw.jatax@lakenheath.af.mil.
