Take the 2011 Survivor Challenge The 2011 Survivor Challenge, a Commander's Trophy event, is designed to test the physical and mental abilities of the participating teams. It will be held June 17 beginning at 11:30 a.m. Each team must have five members with at least two females. All teams must be submitted by June 15. For more information, call the fitness center at 226-3607. Knight's Table Dining Facility Closure The Knight's Table Dining Facility will be closed June 17 to Sept. 8 due to reconstruction. Basic Allowance for Subsistence for Essential Station Messing or meal card personnel has been approved during this timeframe. Members need to plan accordingly. A meal deduction amount will still show on servicemembers' Leave and Earning Statement for June. From June 17 to 30, members will be responsible for buying their own meals, but not see the funding until their June 30 paycheck. It is important for members to check their LES every month. If members are on meal deductions, it will show as such in the deductions portion on a person's LES. Supervisors should check with Airmen to ensure they can financially shoulder the burden of purchasing all their meals until the end-of-month June paycheck. During this time, meal deductions will stop, creating an increase of $9.25 a day (roughly $277.50 a month). Cost of Living Allowance, which is based on rank, time in service, and macroeconomic factors, will also increase by an average of $5.60 a day (roughly $168 a month). ANNOUNCEMENTS Importing Vehicles to the U.K. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency no longer requires military members to obtain an original hard copy of their insurance certificates for imported registration purposes. Personnel can now print their insurance certificates by accessing their policy online; however, faxed, photocopied or scanned copies are still not accepted. PROGRAMS & CLUBS Midsummer Knight at RAF Lakenheath Library As part of a summer reading program, children and teens are encouraged to continue reading this summer. During the summer, the library will be hosting a singer and storyteller program, armor and sword fighting presentation, teen late night and movie end party for all participants. Air Force Club Scholarship Program Air Force Club members and their families are eligible to participate in the 2011 Air Force Scholarship Program for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship. Participants must submit an essay on the topic "My Contribution(s) to the Air Force" in 500 words or less. Entry brochures can be picked up at the Liberty Club. SOAR Program U.S. Air Forces in Europe Education and Training is accepting nominations for the Scholarships for Outstanding Airmen to ROTC until Sept. 1. Airmen selected will separate from the active-duty Air Force, join an Air Force ROTC detachment and become a full-time college student. The Air Force provides them with a tuition and fees scholarship of up to $18,000 per year, an annual textbook allowance of $900, and a monthly non-taxable stipend of $250 to $500. Students may not pay the difference to attend higher cost schools. This scholarship will be awarded for two to four years, depending on how many years one has remaining in the bachelor's degree program. Airmen with some or no college credit may apply for the program. A limited number of SOAR selects will be offered a scholarship with no tuition cap. Upon graduation and completion of the program, the Airman will be commissioned as a second lieutenant and will return to active duty with military obligation of four years active or four years Reserve. LAKENHEATH SCHOOLS Adopt-A-School The Adopt-A-School Program encourages units and squadrons to adopt a school and volunteer their time in building a positive role model relationship with the Department of Defense Dependents School community. Squadrons and units who adopt a specific school will be able to volunteer for various programs, events or activities within the school. Adopt-A-Classroom This program is designed for a small group of people who wish to work with a classroom or in a specific venue of a school, such as volunteering for sports activities or school stores. Individuals can contact the School Liaison Office and indicate what teacher or activity the group would like to volunteer. The SLO will make all the necessary arrangements to set up the opportunity between the desired classroom or activity. This program allows small groups to become more involved with the children and allows the group to excel in a particular field rather than working on a large scale with the school. Mentor Program at Lakenheath Elementary School Lakenheath Elementary School is seeking adult volunteers to work one hour a week with third grade students in the Mentor Program. The program meets during lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Monday. Mentors work one-on-one with students to foster achievement at school by building a positive, caring relationship. Activities include eating lunch together, doing 10 to 15 minutes of academic review, and then enjoying some social time, such as playing board games. Crosswalk Volunteers Needed Everyone in the community, to include military, U.S. and MOD civilian personnel, parents and contractors, needs to ensure that children are kept safe while walking to and from school. Five volunteers are needed twice a day to ensure coverage throughout the high-traffic areas. The crosswalks are located near the Lord's Walk housing area, the housing office, the roundabouts by Liberty Intermediate School and Lakenheath Elementary School. The range complex is in the southwest corner of the base and is surrounded by a perimeter fence clearly marked by danger signs. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. When firing is in progress, red range flags or red flashing beacons will be visible from all range complex entrance points. Unauthorized entry to the range complex is illegal and hazardous due to gunfire and airborne lead particles within the complex.
