Free wireless Internet coming to RAF Lakenheath dorms Published May 31, 2011 By Senior Airman Tiffany M. Deuel 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- The initial installation of free wireless Internet in the dormitory day rooms started May 25 at RAF Lakenheath and will be available to more than 900 Airmen. All of the day rooms in the dormitories will have free Internet for the residents to use, whereas Airmen previously had to buy service in their rooms. "I think that it's a great idea to install free Internet in the dorms. It will give us the opportunity to meet our fellow dorm residents, "said Senior Airman Efren Ortiz, 48th Munitions Squadron armament team member. "It goes to show that our leadership does care about our morale and welfare." Through meetings and questionnaires, dorm council members and first sergeants discovered Airmen wanted free internet and wing leadership approved it in early May. "Although this initiative may save money for our Airmen, the intent is to create an environment that encourages healthy socializing," said Col. John Quintas, 48th Fighter Wing commander. The Internet will be provided for a one-year trial to see how the Airmen respond to the service and it is slated to be up and running by mid-June. "It's a good way to get the dorm residents to come out of their rooms and interact with one another. I'm looking forward to being able to use the Internet," said Airman 1st Class James Floyd, 48th Force Support Squadron services technician.
