Air Force wide, prisoners of war and those missing in action are being recognized and remembered. The Liberty Wing joined them in this remembrance with a week full of events to honor our prisoners of war and those missing in action.

The Lakenheath branch Air Force Sergeants Association kicked off POW/MIA week with a breakfast at Eagles' Landing on Sept. 13. The breakfast included a documentary that focused on POWs. The guest speaker, Charles Waite, World War II prisoner of war, from Essex, England, talked about his capture and five-year stay at Camp Stalag XXB, Germany, as a worker and the three-month 'death march' to Berlin.

He ended with a statement that was followed by a standing ovation.

"I've often been called a 'Dunkirk hero'. I am not. The heroes are those who are still there."

The next day, RAFs Lakenheath and Mildenhall bikers suited up for a motorcycle rally ride around both bases and laid wreaths on war memorials along the route.

With all the reflection, fitness is not forgotten. Thursday morning Liberty Warriors participated in the 2010 POW/MIA 5K run. Even mothers with their children bundled up in strollers ran alongside Airmen of all ranks in the chilly English weather.

One Airman expressed his gratitude for the event.

"It's nice to be able to do something I like and also remember our missing military members," said Senior Airman Casey Herron, 48th Force Support Squadron Services journeyman.

Also on Thursday, Airmen from all over the wing volunteered to participate in a 24-hour vigil while reading the names of prisoners of war and missing in action from every military branch.

The week of remembrance will end today with a special retreat ceremony in honor of these heroes.
