Col. Jay Silveria, 48th Fighter Wing commander, has teamed with the 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs office to enter the world of social media.

The "48th Fighter Wing Commander" fan page went public Mar. 30 and is now open to anyone who wants to become a fan.

Facebook allows its users to limit who can view their personal pages, so although someone may become a fan of the page, no one else in the group -- including the commander -- can see a fan's page without the fan's consent.

"I am hoping this will be another forum where base personnel and their families can share information about events happening on base and in the local communities," the colonel said. "I hope members of the public will find the page another source of information about the base and the men and women who serve here, also."

The page will provide a professional environment where people can get the latest updates about what's going on around RAF Lakenheath, see photos and videos of the different groups on base, share information about private organization events, voice concerns about issues and much more.

"The page is not a place to jump the chain of command, as Airmen should still go to their supervisors for individual issues," said 2nd Lt. Ashley Skillman, 48th Fighter Wing public affairs deputy chief. "Additionally, while the fan page is a place to get information and discuss subjects with a base-wide appeal, it is not meant to replace the base's public website: www.lakenheath.af.mil."

Although the public affairs office is helping with the administration of the page, Colonel Silveria will routinely visit the site and post status updates and comments.

"I will use the site to communicate with wing and the public, but the page is not intended to be about me," the colonel said. "Instead, I intend for it to be another forum for base personnel and their family members to interact and share information. As millions of people are using social media now, I see this as a great opportunity to reach people through a different medium and to generate discussion within the Liberty Wing family."

Those participating should keep in mind that this page is a social networking site which is open to the public, so the core values apply, as well as operational security and Privacy Act guidelines. Some basic rules to remember are:

- Do not post classified, sensitive or for official use only information (for example, troop movement, force size, weapon details, etc.). If in doubt, talk to your supervisor or security manager.
- Do not post any defamatory, libelous, vulgar, obscene, profane, threatening, racially and ethnically hateful, or otherwise offensive or illegal information or material.

- Do not post any information that would infringe upon the propriety, privacy or personal rights of others.

- Do not forge or otherwise manipulate identifiers in your post in an attempt to disguise, impersonate or otherwise misrepresent your identity or affiliation with any other person or entity.

- Do not post any information or other material protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner.

Posts that violate these rules will be deleted by the page administrators.
