Unit security manager practices 'Excellence in All We Do' Published Sept. 17, 2009 ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Name and Rank: Senior Airman Joshua Gulke Unit: 48th Communications Squadron Duty Title: Unit security manager Time in Service: 5 years, 2 months Time at Lakenheath: 3 years, 8 months Hometown: Marysville, Wash. Hobbies: Writing, gaming, hiking, watching old black and white or Technicolor movies and baseball Core Value Portrayed: "Excellence in All We Do" How does the individual portray that core value? Airman Gulke exemplifies the core value "Excellence in All We Do" by performing his job to perfection and by the book, leaving no room for error. Why is serving in the Air Force important to you? Before joining the Air Force, I never felt part of anything bigger than myself. The Air Force gave me a home and made me who I am today. What accomplishment during your Air Force career are you most proud of? During a deployment in Afghanistan, I was thrust into a high-paced wartime environment where I had to learn about programs outside the scope of my career and knowledge. I not only earned the trust of the special forces operators in my work center, but I was given responsibility that far exceeded my rank. I learned valuable skills that have continued to help me, even in my job at home station. What are your personal and/or professional goals? My personal goal is to get my bachelor's degree in computer security and to be the absolute best husband I can be. Professionally, I know cyber security is becoming more of an issue, especially since warfare is constantly being fought on the cyber domain. I would like to earn a Certified Information Systems Security Professional Certification, and perhaps, when I retire from the military in 20 or so years, I can keep contributing to the fight. What is your favorite part of your job? What isn't my favorite part? I love the interaction with the squadron on security-related issues. I enjoy trying to make boring security training into something that relates to the individual. Its genuinely a blast trying to come up with ways to catch their attention.
