48th EMS civilian exemplifies Service Before Self Published Dec. 19, 2008 ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Norman Killeen, 48th Equipment Maintenance Squadron Aerospace Ground Equipment scheduler, was nominated for the Liberty spotlight by his chain of command because he practices the Air Force core value of "Service Before Self." Commander: Major Darrin "DB" Dronoff Time in Service: 12 Years MOD Civilian, 42 years total service Time at Lakenheath: 7.5 Years Home Town: Bircham - Newton, Norfolk, UK. Hobbies: Local community volunteer work (e.g., parish councillor, training as a first aid responder, numerous community projects and seasonal "Santa" stunt double.) Core Value Portrayed: Service Before Self - I am nominating Mr. Killeen for the Squadron's first-ever MoD Liberty Spot Light Award for his immeasurable contributions over the past eight years supporting numerous squadron Christmas parties for the local areas underprivileged children. However, his effort this year has been nothing short of phenomenal. During a time of year when most people or focusing on their families, Mr. Killeen took it upon himself to think of others and stepped forward to chair this year's committee. He worked closely with the local community and other military organizations to establish a venue, set up fundraisers, and obtain the necessary gifts to ensure a memorable event for 163 children. Without Mr. Killeen's untiring efforts the event would have not been possible and the children may not have been afforded the opportunity to have a joyful Christmas. In total, his years of volunteering spirit have been the catalyst to the squadron's ability to host the events which have positively impacted thousands of children. It is these qualities and levels of dedication that most embody the Air Force Core Value of Service Before Self. Why serving is important to you? First, my family has always served in the military so I suppose it is something of a family tradition. In saying that, the mission of the Air Force is not much different than that of the British Army in that we both strive to always improve what has been given to us. I guess this is why I have continued to work alongside the military for so long as it confirms the values and beliefs learned during my 22 Years of service in the British Army. What are your personal and career goals? Completing First Aid Responder training, and continue my support of the AGE Flight whilst looking forward to retirement in a few years time.
