Halloween is approaching and, with the recently awarded goal day, Liberty Warriors will have the opportunity to spend all day preparing for a night of tricks and treats.

From Halloween parties to trick-or-treating with children, the night can pose several situations in which people can make safe decisions affecting themselves and others.

"People need to make sure they're paying attention while driving," said Staff Sgt. Scott Richard, 48th Fighter Wing ground safety. "Use extra caution, especially in base housing."

Sergeant Richard stressed the importance of wearing reflective material and bright colors. He also said parental supervision is key.

"Make sure children are using sidewalks and crosswalks," he said. With the recent switch from Daylight Savings Time, the night grows dark earlier, making little ghosts and goblins more difficult to see.

To help keep kids safe this Halloween, RAF Lakenheath has the volunteer Pumpkin Patrol, which will be escorting trick-or-treaters Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. in all base housing areas, including those off-base.

While children are out collecting candy, adults may be celebrating the festivities in their own way.

"Make sure you know your limits and always have a plan," Sergeant Richard said. "If you're the designated driver, stay sober."

Sergeant Richard said to keep safety in mind this Halloween, whether people are staying home or traveling over the long weekend.

"Just look out for a friend, co-worker, roommate or supervisor. Watch out for one another," he said.
