Donation bin now in place at Airman's Attic Published Oct. 15, 2008 By Staff Sgt. Nathan Gallahan 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom -- A clothing and shoe bin has been placed outside of the Airman's Attic to make donating items to the organization easier. The clothing and shoe bin is always available, but isn't there for fragile items, such as microwaves and glassware. "We're asking people not to throw fragile items in the bin just because it's a pretty large drop from the shoot to the floor of the bin and we don't' want to see those items broken up - then nobody gets to use them," said Elke Gillogly, Airman's Attic Coordinator. To donate fragile or large items like furniture, she said that people should wait until the Attic opens for donations, and make sure the items are clean and free of trash. "If they leave the furniture outside it's going to get ruined and then nobody can use it," she said. "So we need people to drop those kinds of things off while we're open so we can put them inside right away to protect them from the elements." Once the items are donated, volunteers at the Airman's Attic organize them throughout their facility and ready them for the shopping hours. All Airmen E-5 and below are authorized to shop and take whatever they want for free. Anybody can donate. "We accept anything from clothes, shoes, furniture, books, tapes, VCRs, BDUs, ABUs, blues to toys," Mrs. Gillogly said. "We take everything but old computer monitors, potty chairs, car seats and hazardous material." "We get a lot of good donations, and the community benefits greatly from it," she said. "Without it, everything might go in the trash." Open for donations: Monday - Thursday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shopping Hours Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
