RAFL, RAFM celebrate Independence Day with celebration Published June 20, 2008 By 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Each year on July 4, RAF's Lakenheath and Mildenhall unite and open the gates at RAF Feltwell for Americans and local British to celebrate U.S. Independence Day. This year, a fun run will kick off the day at 9 a.m., and the gates to the celebration will be open to the public from noon until midnight. During the celebration, visitors can enjoy carnival rides, live music, softball games, a car show and a fireworks show and these are just a few, according to Keith Beaumont, 48th Services Squadron deputy coordinator of the Fourth of July celebration, "And of course, fireworks are scheduled for 10 p.m." Also, 28 private organizations have signed-up to sell a variety of food items. "This year's cuisine lists everything from Philippine to Mexican delights, shish kabobs, chicken wings, Frito pies and the American Independence Day favorites - hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cake and popcorn," said Cindy Workman, 48th Services Squadron deputy coordinator of the Fourth of July celebration. "Squadron shirts, coins and other memorabilia will also be available." Last year, more than 20,000 Americans and local British attended the event and more are expected this year. "This is the major event of the year, a time for the U.K. community to come out and experience "home style American hospitality" and for the two communities to share the Fourth of July celebration here in the U.K.," said Mr. Beaumont. On the side: The 48th Security Forces Squadron will conduct searches of all hand carried items prior to entering the festivity area. Only purses, baby bags and lawn chairs are authorized as hand-carried items. The following items are not allowed on RAF Feltwell; · All liquids. (Gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers) · Coolers · Duffle bags and other large hand-carried items · Weapons (knives, firearms, objects that fire a projectile that can potentially injure someone, blunt force objects, etc.) · Drugs/drug paraphernalia · Potential explosive material · Protest paraphernalia (banners, spray paint, locks, chains, handcuffs, fence cutting tools, bullhorns, etc.) * This is not an all inclusive list. The 48th SFS and Ministry of Defence Police may restrict items not conducive to safety, security and public order.
