Turn off the tap! Published May 9, 2008 By 48th Civil Engineer Squadron Environmental Flight ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Did you know East Anglia is one of the driest parts of the United Kingdom? We only receive about one-half the national average of rainfall for England and Wales. Summer evaporation can cause the reservoirs and aquifers to slowly become depleted, so water conservation is important. RAF Lakenheath is helping to conserve water with drought-resistant grass in some areas. This grass requires 80 percent less water than standard grass. Older piping has been replaced to increase water efficiency and low-flow toilets have been installed at several locations on base. Individuals can help with the water-conservation effort in their own homes by following a few simple guidelines: -Water at dusk to prevent the water evaporating -Don't leave running water unattended -Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth -Take a short shower instead of a bath -Fix leaky taps-a dripping tap can leak more than 300 gallons of water every year -Collect rainwater for watering the garden These simple steps can help decrease water usage and maintain the water supply in times of drought. It can also cut down on utility bills. It's important to be mindful of the environment and to take the time to help conserve the water in this area.
