Legal Notice: Tax return filing extensions

  • Published
April 15 is the normal deadline for filing a federal tax return.

Military members stationed overseas have an automatic extension until June 16, 2008 to file their 2007 personal income tax return. However, this is an extension to file, not an extension to pay money that is owed.

For members of the military serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or other combat-zone localities, the filing and payment deadline is postponed until 180 days after the service member leaves the combat zone.

In addition to the 180 days, the deadline is extended by the number of days that were left to take the action with the IRS when an Airman entered a combat zone (or began performing qualifying service outside the combat zone) or began serving in a contingency operation.

The deadline extensions also apply to individuals serving in the combat zone in support of the U.S. Armed Forces, such as merchant marines serving aboard vessels under the operational control of the Department of Defense, Red Cross personnel, accredited correspondents, and civilian personnel acting under the direction of the U.S. Armed Forces in support of those forces.
