Reading for rewards Published April 10, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Torri Ingalsbe 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Books and bowling balls aren't typically grouped together unless they're on the same page in a dictionary. However, RAF Lakenheath Library and Liberty Lanes Bowling Center have teamed up this month to offer rewards for reading and a chance for families to have some fun. "The Read-to-Bowl Program encourages kids to read," said Kathleen Hanselmann, 48th Services Squadron library director. She said it also promotes exercise and is a win-win situation for parents and children. For every hour a child spends reading, Liberty Lanes gives them a voucher for a free game of bowling. The base library has forms children or their parents can pick up to get started on the Read-to-Bowl Program. Each form has blocks to sign for a 15-minute period of reading. Once all the blocks are filled, the child can return the form to the library and pick up their vouchers. The age limit is 17 and if a child is too young to read, they can still participate by having someone read to them. "This is a fantastic program," said Woody Woodard, 48th SVS library technician. "It provides a great opportunity to get the enjoyment out of reading and also have fun." The program runs the entire month of April and there is no limit to the amount of vouchers kids can receive. The vouchers also don't have an expiration date, so families aren't constrained to have their fun within a certain window of time. "This program gives positive rewards for doing something equally positive," Mr. Woodard said. For more information on the Read-to-Bowl Program, visit the base library.
