LaVoie 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- En route to London, nine Red Arrows and four Typhoons will fly over RAF Lakenheath April 1 at approximately 12:38 p.m. as part of the Royal Air Force 90th anniversary celebrations. The aircraft are part of a British Aerial Demonstration Team similar to the Thunderbirds and will flyby at about 1000 feet, giving military members and aviation enthusiasts and opportunity to see the Red Arrows in flight. The formation will continue to London, where it will fly along the River Thames and past the London Eye. "The Red Arrows are renowned throughout the world as ambassadors for both the Royal Air Force and the United Kingdom," said Squadron Leader Jeremy Neild, RAF Lakenheath commander. "Since the Team was officially formed in 1965, the Red Arrows have completed over 4,000 displays in 53 countries. "The Red Arrows' reputation is built on commitment and professionalism, combined with Royal Air Force skills, training and equipment," he added. "Many of the Red Arrows' pilots and support staff have recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq and many will be temporarily detached on operations overseas during their time with the team." The Royal Air Force became a service November 29, 1917 when an Act of Parliament was passed, establishing an Air Force and an Air Force Council, according to the Royal Air Force historical Web site. In addition to the formation flight, the Royal Air Force will celebrate its heritage throughout 2008 with events including a dinner at the Royal Air Force Museum and the presentation of both the Royal Air Force and Royal Air Force Regiment Colors in July at the Royal International Air Tattoo. During the Battle of Britain weekend in September they will celebrate the contribution that the personnel of the Royal Air Force have made to the defense and security of the U.K. For more information on the Red Arrows go to www.raf.mod.uk/reds/
