Liberty Warriors practice evasive skills with dodge ball Published Jan. 25, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Kristopher Levasseur 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- The smell of sweat and rubber fills the air and the sound of shoes squeaking on the court pierces through the roar of the crowd as 12 people dash towards the center line at the Lakenheath Fitness center's dodge ball tournament. According to Lorraine Botwright, 48th Services Squadron fitness program director, the tournament, which was inspired by the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, involved 11 teams with six members each from various organizations around base. "A lot of squadrons have been using dodge ball as a fun activity for their physical training programs," said Mrs. Botwright. "The tournament was a big success. We had a good showing and everyone that came seemed to really enjoy themselves." The Big Fatties, a team made up of members from the 48th Munitions Squadron precision guided munitions shop, took the championship by beating out the 48th Civil Engineer Squadron Firedogs and 48th Services Squadron team in the finals. "There was no doubt in our minds going into the tournament that we were going to win," said Adam Mleko, 48th MUNS team member. "We were impressed with how the young FTAC team performed, as well as the services team." The fitness center is planning to have another dodge ball tournament in May. "We are the team to beat," said Mleko. "We plan in participating in the next tournament and we welcome all challengers." For more information on upcoming fitness events, call 226-3607.
