British Post Office offers more than mail Published Jan. 10, 2008 By Tech. Sgt. J. LaVoie 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs RAF LAKENHEATH, England -- During the last few months, there isn't a person on base who didn't visit the U.S. Post Office at least once. Whether picking up holiday packages, or sending someone a treasured keepsake, almost everyone stopped by the U.S. Post Office. Many people, however, probably didn't notice the little red sign around the corner declaring the existence of a British Post Office. "I've talked to people who have been here a year and didn't even know we we're on base," said Les Pope, British Post Office manager. The British Post offers many of the services of the U.S. Post Office. Its staff sells stamps, mails letters and provides insured and express post. However, as soon as customers walk in and are greeted by a counter of candy and keepsakes for sale, they know something is different. In fact, the services offered in a British Post Office are far reaching compared to those of a U.S. Post office. Airmen can pay everything from gas and water bills to telephone and mail orders at the post office. The post office also has the ability to cash and deposit checks to select banks, as well as issue and redeem money orders. "We have euros for sale and have currencies from 70 different countries if they order ahead," said Mr. Pope. In addition to handling money for Airmen, the British Post Office also sells a variety of insurance, from travel, to car and home insurance. Airmen can also get a road tax license issued, as well as a selection of Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency application forms. The British Post Office also sells calling cards and cell phone top ups. To take advantage of all these services and more; follow the little red sign around the corner to the British Post Office.
