Civil Engineer Squadron holds undefeated title for championship Published Nov. 5, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Torri Ingalsbe 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- The undefeated 48th Civil Engineer Squadron dominated the 48th Medical Group, 27-0 after a one-sided football game to take the flag football title in the championship game Oct. 31. The 48th CES took the field the first half and didn't let the 48th MDG past their 50-yard line during the majority of the game, ensuring their record would go untainted. The first points on the board came early in the first half with a passing touchdown to the team's MVP, Joe Schick for 48th CES. They passed it in again for the extra point, making the score 7-0. The 48th MDG's passing and running game were both shut-down forcing a punt back to 48th CES. Roberto Downing from 48th CES scored another touchdown in their next drive down the field. They made the extra point with a one-handed catch in the end zone. One more 48th CES touchdown by Clayton Freeman with the extra point and tenacious defense by Adam Vander Zanden concluded the first half with a score of 21-0. The 48th MDG came back in the second half with more fire and a stronger defensive presence. They forced two turnovers and kept the ball near the 48th CES end zone. Their persistence, however, wasn't enough to take down 48th CES. The last drive of the game showed their talent as they brought the ball down the field almost 60 yards and scored the final touchdown by Schick. The extra point was deflected, making the final score 27-0. "We didn't have any change in the way we play for this game," said Jerry Dunn, 48th MDG coach. "We've played them before and we knew we had to play hard. They just had a better game than we did." There were congratulatory slaps on the back and smiles on both sides as the teams gathered after the game for the award presentation. "We had a great offense and an amazing defense," said Dustin Richards, 48th CES coach. "Our goal since day one has been to win the championship and we accomplished that. It's also a huge honor to go out undefeated."
