COMPLAINT:

The traffic outside of RAF Lakenheath is backed up so far, it's making me late to work. Can you do anything about it between the hours of 0730 and 0830?

RESPONSE:

The construction project to upgrade Gate 1 has caused disruptions to the traffic flow on the A1065 and B1112 during peak travel times, and I understand that it's frustrating for those who have experienced delays over the past couple of weeks. There are a few things I'd like to share with you about this project. First, I assure you we have done all we can to make this process as painless as possible.  Specifically, I asked our Civil Engineers and Security Forces to take steps to minimize the project's impact to base personnel and the local community by compressing the contractor's schedule to get the job done as quickly as possible and to increase the number of personnel checking IDs at both gates to keep traffic flowing.  Second, the upgrades to Gate 1 are absolutely critical to the long-term security of RAF Lakenheath's personnel and assets, so that we can continue to do our mission safely and securely.  Unfortunately, achieving this long-term security posture means enduring some short-term disruptions. Lastly, I want to inform you  that the final phase of the construction project is due to start on Nov. 16 and end just before Christmas. During this phase, Gate 2 will be the only entrance for base traffic as Gate 1 will be an exit only.  We will have additional ID checkers in place during the morning commute. Thank you for your continued patience as we make this vital upgrade to RAF Lakenheath security.
