CS makes every dollar count, upgrades CMS computer servers Published June 5, 2015 By Airman 1st Class Dawn M. Weber 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- The 48th Communications Squadron recently completed an Interactive Electronic Technical Manual [IETM] server upgrade for the 48th Component Maintenance Squadron computer systems. CMS Airmen were waiting an average of 30 minutes to log into system computers. In just two weeks, CS Airmen Tech Sgt. Christopher Perkuhn, Senior Airman Donithan Sewell and Airman 1st Class Ruben Gracia-Garcia rebuilt the CMS servers, shortening the login time to 26 seconds. IETMs is a fundamental part of the CMS engine production. "The revision that the CS just pushed through was to make IETM more efficient to time management and productivity," said Staff Sgt. Justin Walker, 48th CMS aerospace propulsions craftsman. "Our computers are now more user friendly for our Airmen to operate." Before the update, there was a routine disconnection interrupting daily work schedules, wasting on average, 175 man hours a month. The inefficiency of the outdated IETM system was costing the Air Force $209,539.20 per year. "It became a big deal because the information is stored virtually. These servers were almost a decade old," said Tech. Sgt. Christopher Perkuhn, 48 CS NCO in charge of cyber operations. "If the servers were to go down or propulsions Airmen were unable to access the server, they would be unable to work on the engines." According to Staff Sgt. Vanessa Redman, 48th CMS propulsions flight trainer, although there were a few bumps in the road, the transition to the new server is complete and functioning well. "We were not only able to improve the time it takes to log in to the IETM server, but we were able to make additional improvements to the system," Redman said. "This means less time on a computer and more time on what really matters: mission essential engine production." Since the upgrade, productivity has increased by an average of 99%, saving an average of 165.6 man hours a month and $198,057.60 annually.
