Hobbies: Cooking and working out Core Value Portrayed: Service Before Self How does the individual portray this core value? Chris Howard was submitted for a Liberty Spotlight by Lt. Col. Cory Baker, 48th Medical Support Squadron commander. According to Baker, Howard embodies Service Before Self through his contributions to many organizations across the RAF Lakenheath community. He provided outstanding support to the Boy Scouts of America, Mayflower District Troop 219, as chaperone for their Normandy trip, as well as three local campouts, during which he biked, hiked, oriented, and was the grubmaster for 25 boys and adults. During the 48th Medical Group's Nurse Appreciation Week, he was the dedicated chef providing meals for 55 nurses and technicians throughout the entire event, after which he was coined by the 48th MDG's chief nurse. As a member of the 48th MDG's Medical Auxiliary Group, he coordinated quarterly squadron appreciation meals. With a team of seven members, his efforts led to the group hosting 700 medical staff personnel. Other examples of his support have been: decorating the base Christmas tree, serving on a scholarship committee, providing meal service for distinguished visitors, dorm dinners, senior NCO and officer mentoring groups, retirements and promotions ceremonies. His barbecue skills and macaroni and cheese recipe have become a legacy at RAF Lakenheath. "Anywhere, anytime" is the motto Howard lives by. How do you support the mission of the 48th Fighter Wing? I support the mission through a broad spectrum of activities, from cooking for promotions, mentoring functions and retirements, to moving furniture, decorating for special events and helping neighbors with yard work. What is your favorite part of being a military/civil service spouse? The opportunity to meet and work with people who are taking care of the mission is what I enjoy most. What inspires you to do everything you do? I'm inspired by others' joy and the opportunity to make a difference. What advice can you give other military/ civil service spouses? Jump in and be an asset. Stay positive and use your talents, whatever they may be, because you are a valuable contributor to the mission. Let your light shine!
