Liberty Spotlight: Tech. Sgt. Chafin Published Jan. 22, 2015 By 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Name and Rank: Tech. Sgt. Robert Chafin Unit: 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron Duty Title: NCO in charge of fuels laboratory Time in Service: 13 years Time at RAF Lakenheath: 5 years Hometown: Montgomery, Ala. Hobbies: Playing golf, bowling, going to the gym, cars and spending time with family Core Value Portrayed: Service Before Self How does the individual portray this core value? Chafin was submitted for a Liberty Spotlight by Master Sgt. Robert McCormick, 48th Logistic Readiness Squadron fuels information service center superintendent. According to McCormick, Chafin is a shining example of Service Before Self every day he serves. This was made extremely apparent when an F15-D Eagle crashed. Chafin sacrificed his personal time to stay and ensure the fuel and oxygen used in that aircraft were clean, dry and on-specification. He sampled and cleared 3,000,000 gallons of JP-8 jet fuel and 3,000 gallons of aviators' breathing oxygen in less than three hours. This was critical information used by the accident investigation board. This is just one example of Chafin's dedication to the Air Force core value of Service Before Self. Why did you join the Air Force? I joined the Air Force to provide my family with a better life, to travel and to serve my country. How does your job support the mission of the 48th Fighter Wing? My job is to make sure that all fuel we receive, store and issue is on-specification and safe for use. What is your favorite part of your job? I like the fact that my job is completely hands-on and changes day to day. What drives you as an Airman? The image I portray to my kids is important to me, and this is the reason I take pride in both what I do and the uniform I wear. What skills do you possess that set you apart from others? I hold a Special Experience Identifier that allows me to fill a critical Unit Type Code for temporary duty assignments and deployments. What has been your favorite place to travel in England/Europe, or where would you like to travel to? I would really like to take a vacation to Spain!
