RAF Feltwell opened its gates July 4 and hosted a celebration that drew hundreds of military personnel, their families, and members of the United Kingdom community.

The free, public event kicked off at noon and featured rides, games, food booths, and an aerial demonstration from the RAF Red Arrows.

"I'm excited that we've been able to bring back this great tradition and to celebrate alongside you and your families," said Col. Kyle Robinson, 48th Fighter Wing commander at RAF Lakenheath. "We've teamed up with the 100th Air Refueling Wing at RAF Mildenhall, and our force support squadrons have set up an excellent Independence Day celebration."

James Cross, a member of the local community whose wife is a family advocacy nurse for the Air Force, said it was good to see the base involved with the community.

"It's fantastic," he said. "My family and I come out to the celebration every year and we are happy to see it back this year."

The event also included many family activities, a car and bike show, live music performances, and ended with a fireworks display set to music.

Christopher Beck, from Lakenheath village, said he brings his family to the celebration every year.

"It's really great for everyone because there are so many things to do," he said. "My three girls each have a different favorite activity, from the games, to the rides, to the food."

Staff Sgt. Jeremy Fritz, 100th Communications Squadron at RAF Mildenhall, said the fireworks finale was outstanding.

"It was definitely the best part of the celebration, especially with the patriotic music playing," he said."

And as the event kicked off a four-day weekend during the Critical Days of Summer, Robinson emphasized safety to Airmen and their families, urging them to keep safety in mind.

"No matter how you choose to celebrate this holiday weekend, please do so safely and responsibly," said Robinson. "Have a great Fourth of July weekend--you deserve it!"
