In today's Air Force, phone and Internet connectivity are some of the most vital tools in supporting the everyday mission.

With a mission that's always on the move, Airmen of the 48th Communications Squadron cyber transport unit ensure infrastructure connectivity for RAFs Lakenheath and Feltwell.

"Cyber transport Airmen manage, maintain and control devices that give you the ability to send and receive information from local services, the Internet and any other networks your computer is connected to," said Staff Sgt. Nicholas Hazen, 48th CS cyber transport NCO in charge.

In addition to providing reliable phone and data connection, they also ensure the base's unclassified and classified communication infrastructure is working properly and is up to date with the latest approved vendor software and security measures.

"We were recently tasked with upgrading the communication infrastructure of 183 buildings on RAFs Lakenheath and Feltwell," Hazen said.

Cyber transport Airmen worked to replace and configure the majority of the Ethernet and fiber optic equipment supporting more than 5,900 users, a project that took two months to complete.

"We aided in the removal, installation and configuration of 423 network switches and routers across both bases, allowing the new Juniper system to run in tandem with our current Cisco infrastructure," said Airman 1st Class Kyle Mitchell, 48th CS cyber transport technician.

With major infrastructure upgrades to RAFs Lakenheath and Feltwell, as well as constant maintenance of the base's networks, cyber transport Airmen help develop and support the daily mission and Airmen of today and tomorrow.
