The Armed Services Blood Program collected blood from 48th Fighter Wing Airmen here, May 3.

Each donor is screened by a member of the ASBP team to ensure 100 percent eligibility to give blood. Blood collected by the ASBP directly supports military service members and their families in need worldwide.

Ensuring the safety and integrity of the donors as well as the blood is the ASBP team's top priority, said Colleen Urban, ASBP donor recruiter.

"The best part of ASBP is that all blood donated, by active duty, dependents and retirees, stays in the military community," said Urban. "Collecting within the military, eliminates having to purchase blood from blood banks, cutting costs, as well as ensuring a safe blood supply."

Blood donated is used to treat cancer patients, surgical patients and, if needed, battlefield injuries.

"The fact that my blood could potentially be saving someone's life is the reason I keep donating," Staff Sgt. Jennifer Golden, 48th Component Maintenance Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of supply. "I donate every time I have the chance and I'll continue to donate as long as I can."

"As a former military member, my husband is currently active duty and we have a child," Urban said. "This program is very near and dear to my heart, it's an amazing organization to be a part of especially with a family who could possibly need the blood one day."
