A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held here, April 22, to welcome the newly opened Airman Community Center inside of the education building.

In December of 2015, Senior Airman Taylor Blakney, 48th Component Maintenance Squadron aerospace propulsion journeyman, approached Capt. Kenya Gray, 48th Fighter Wing chaplain, with a vision to provide a safe and interactive place for Airmen on the weekends.

According to Blakney, his previous assignment offered a facility that provided a place for Airmen to hang-out, and he longed for a similar place after he arrived at Lakenheath where he soon recognized it was difficult to meet new people.

Blakney reached out to his coworkers, Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Cox, 48th CMS aerospace propulsion apprentice, and Senior Airman Kennyarthur Solomon, 48th CMS designated engine supply support, who dedicated hours of service in efforts to make their vision a reality.

The chapel-funded ACC will host movie nights, meals and mentoring, which provides senior leadership the opportunity to offer Airmen guidance and mentorship, day-trips, video games and other activities that encourage unity.

As the facility is volunteer-based, six council members will be elected to help organize events and maintain the facility.

Currently open Fridays and Saturdays, the volunteers strive to have the ACC open seven-days-a-week to provide Airmen with the tools they need to decompress and relieve stress after work in a healthy manner.
