Spartans host National Police Week Published May 20, 2016 By Tech. Sgt. "National Police Week is extremely important because it is our way to honor our 14 fallen Security Forces members and 19,000 US Law Enforcement Officers that have paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said Lt. Col. Opielowski, 48th Security Forces commander. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day; which occurs during National Police Week. The annual observance commemorates law enforcement officers who've fallen in the line of duty. “We are all very busy with the day to day mission, but this special week allows us a moment to pause and pay tribute to those that deserve it most- those in blue that took the oath to protect others at all costs and lost their lives in doing so,” said Opielowski This year, both Lakenheath and Mildenhall Defenders began the week with a six mile ruck march, followed by additional events throughout May 16-20. These included a shooting competition, the Defender challenge obstacle course, military working dog competition, community awareness display and closing ceremony.
