Winter is coming, driving hazards are too Published Oct. 6, 2016 By Airman 1st Class Eli Chevalier 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs RAF LAKENHEATH, England -- With fall upon us and winter right around the corner, additional safety precautions need to be taken on the road. Similar to the seasons, driving conditions change throughout the year. With these changes, it’s crucial to take precautions, to ensure the safety of all Liberty Wing members and their families. The 48th Fighter Wing Safety Office makes it a priority to educate wing personnel about the importance of driving safety, as it can be easily overlooked at times. “It’s about roadworthiness of a vehicle,” said Barry Wall, 48th Fighter Wing traffic safety and training manager. “There’s no harm in switching all of your lights on before you leave and checking they all work.” Listed below are key factors to keep in mind while driving this winter: • Stay vigilant. Do not use cell phones while operating a vehicle. • If roads are frozen, beware of black ice. • Routinely check brakes, heaters, tire pressure and vehicle fluids. • Stock nonperishables and water in your vehicle, in case of emergency. • Keep reflective vests and orange cones in your vehicle, to increase visibility. • Always wear your seatbelt. “Be responsible for your actions on the road, to include the condition of your car and how you drive it,” Wall said. “It’s about being a responsible driver.” The Highway Code digital handbook is available, online and as an app, to provide further guidance when driving in the U.K.
