Action Line: Dumpsters in distress

COMPLAINT:

I have worked on RAF Lakenheath for a few years now. I have noticed that trash seems to pile up constantly around several dumpsters on base. The trash is forbidden items that the dumpster driver removes before he takes the container, such as bed springs, big screen TV boxes, etc.

The dumpster near community bank has had abandoned items cluttered around it for months! Next month is Earth Week.

Can cleaning up those areas be on the earth day agenda?

RESPONSE:

You brought up an issue that has been a concern of mine as well, and I agree that Team Lakenheath needs to do more to maintain a clean and tidy base appearance especially around our dumpster areas. The dumpster near the Community Bank and other areas are scheduled to be cleaned up before Earth Day. A cleanup of this nature is, of course, an ongoing effort across the base. We have posted signs on dumpsters asking people not to leave items outside the dumpster or throw away unauthorized items in the dumpsters.

I have asked my Civil Engineers to look at a couple of solutions; revisit the signage on the dumpsters, increased base awareness campaigns, and additional information about the off base waste collection points located just outside our gates. In order to try to help this situation, we'll also use activities during Earth Week to provide information on the proper use of dumpsters. If you are interested in volunteering for an Earth Week activity or to help get the word out, please contact our Environmental Branch at 01638523990 or DSN 226-3990.

Thanks for your time and attention.
