Action Line: Speed limits in Liberty Village

COMPLAINT:

I have been a resident of Liberty Village since Dec.18 2009. I don't see any speed limits posted. Therefore I assume the residents believe they can drive as fast as they want, in and around the housing area. I have had people so close to me that I can almost read their name tapes. What is being done to observe the speed limits in the housing area? Something needs to be done.

RESPONSE:

Thank you for bringing this safety concern to my attention. The 48 FW Traffic Safety Working Group (TSWG), which is comprised of the Civil Engineer Squadron, Security Forces Squadron, and Wing Safety, will convene to address the traffic rules specific to Liberty Village.

The TSWG is conducting a study to determine the best speed limits for motorists transiting through Liberty Village. Once the best speed limits are determined, signs will be posted and community awareness bulletins will be published in The Force Magazine as well as on the Commander's Access Channel to inform base personnel of the speed change/limit in Liberty Village. We might also get a spot on AFN to get the word out. I would like to remind all Liberty Wing motorists that per Lakenheath Instruction 31-204 (Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision), the base speed limit is 25 mph unless otherwise posted and the speed limit in parking lots on base is 5 mph. Additionally, the posted speed limit for Windsor Circle, Birdsview Square, and other housing areas on Lakenheath and Feltwell is 15 mph.

Until this issue is resolved, I would ask all Fighter Wing personnel to use discretion by not exceeding 15 mph when driving in Liberty Village.
