The Crosswalk Program - It's a community responsibility Published Aug. 10, 2009 By Col. Cassie Barlow 48th Mission Support Group commander ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Believe it or not, it is almost time for our kids to start school again! What happened to the summer? If your child is anything like mine, they are asking questions like, "How do I get to school? Where is the bus? How long will it take?" etc. We will be getting that information out to all parents very soon, but for now, I'd like to bring your attention to our Crosswalk Program and how we'd like to make it even more successful this year. There is nobody on this base who wouldn't agree that our children deserve to live and grow in a safe environment. It is our responsibility to give them a safe environment. A lot of our children walk to school every day, and they need our help to make it a safe walk. In order to make it safe, we need to energize the Community Crosswalk Program. It's going to take a community effort to keep our children safe throughout the school year. The crosswalks of primary concern are those around Nathan Gate and Lakenheath Elementary School. Our volunteers will assist in patrolling these high-traffic crosswalks during peak morning (from 7:30 to 8:10 a.m.) and afternoon hours (from 2:45 to 3:10 p.m.), Monday through Friday. Knowing concerned individuals are taking time out of their busy schedules to help this endeavor gives parents an overall peace of mind and sense of security. Think about having your squadron or private organization take a week at a time to volunteer their time for this worthy program. We need volunteers from RAFs Mildenhall and Lakenheath communities to make this program work. Volunteering only takes an hour out of a person's day ... time well spent ensuring a safe community for our kids. To volunteer, all you have to do is pick-up the phone and call the School Liaison Office at 226-5077/5078 or e-mail 48MSG.CCL@lakenheath.af.mil. We need your support!
