Balance important to Liberty member's lives Published Aug. 20, 2007 By Brig. Gen. John Hesterman 48th Fighter Wing commander ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- We've all had weeks where we worked exceptionally long hours with little time for ourselves. We end up feeling tired, lethargic and even angry as a result. Unfortunately it's sometimes an inevitable part of being a member of our U.S. Air Force. We ask a lot of our people; deploy and spend valuable time away from your family, strive for excellence, be a good steward within the community, always complete the mission--and that's just to name a few. That's why balance in your life is such an important part of being a productive member of our team. We're not always lucky enough to enjoy the comforts of our own home, but regardless of your location, I encourage you to contribute to other facets of your life with as much vigor as you contribute to the U.S. Air Force mission. Whether it is a hobby, a sport, spending time with family or traveling, it's important to do what re-invigorates you. It's this balance that provides a framework for your life and gives you the perspective you need to handle the demands of our air force. Everyday I'm amazed at all our Airmen are able to accomplish both professionally and privately. We have artists, triathaletes, exceptional mothers and fathers, hikers, quilters--you name it, we have it! Many of you have experienced long work weeks in preparation for the upcoming unit compliance inspection and you've probably neglected many of your hobbies and personal pursuits. In our cycle of work, this is sometimes necessary. However, re-balancing your life after the inspection is important for your mental and physical health and your ability to be a continued asset to our Air Force. Thank you for your service and remember to make time for yourself and your family in the demands of your everyday life.
