The winter solstice will occur on Dec. 21. In Latin, solstice means "sun set still" and winter solstice is the great stillness before the sun's strength builds and days grow longer. It is the time of year when we experience our shortest day and longest night. Another name for the winter solstice is Yule. (Photo by Suzanne Harper)
