The 48th Fighter Wing Family Advocacy office is hosting several events for Domestic Violence Awareness Month at RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall, England, throughout October, in effort to bring mindfulness to all forms of domestic violence.

According to the 48th Family Advocacy, abuse appears in many forms and often goes unrecognized.

“The four types of domestic abuse that we see in Family Advocacy are physical, emotional, sexual and neglect,” said Jeredith Lord, 48th FW Family Advocacy domestic abuse victim advocate. “A common theme that we see throughout a large percentage of our cases is financial abuse which would fall under emotional.”

On Oct. 17, a silent flash mob will display signs with statistics and spark conversations on domestic violence issues. The education on these issues relies heavily on having potentially difficult conversations.

Additionally, on Oct. 26, a financial retreat will be hosted at RAF Mildenhall, which will include a trip to Bury St Edmunds. This event will provide a different approach to learning about common financial pitfalls and how to communicate in a variety of situations.

The aim of Family Advocacy’s outreach program is to educate Airmen and families about the resources available, and to help prevent abuse.

Earlier this month, Airmen from RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall donated to a Family Advocacy-sponsored donation drive. Several boxes of nonperishable foods, toiletries and other items were donated to a local shelter for women and children displaced due to domestic violence.

Family Advocacy briefs throughout the year at Key Spouse meetings and Newcomer’s Orientation as well as pre-deployment and in re-integration briefings.
