Due to the recent outbreak of E. coli in northern Germany, the Department of Defense has restricted the sale of European-procured lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and bean sprouts on base.

This restriction currently remains in effect as a precaution to prevent further illness. At this point, produce originating from the United Kingdom and United States has not been implicated in the outbreak and is considered safe for human consumption.

There are no known cases among DOD or RAF Lakenheath personnel, and because the outbreak is primarily centered in northern Germany, the risk to the DOD is minimal. To be safe, travelers visiting that region are advised to refrain from purchasing and/or consuming the restricted produce items from local establishments.

While recent reports indicate the number of new cases is declining, the source of the outbreak is still not fully understood. It is essential to be aware of the symptoms of an E. coli infection.

The specific strain of E. coli bacteria associated with the outbreak is capable of producing toxins and causing severe foodborne disease, which may include the following symptoms:

· Bloody diarrhea
· Abdominal cramps
· Fever
· Vomiting

If you or your family members experience these symptoms seek medical attention, especially following travel to Germany. The 48th Medical Group's appointment line is 226-8010 or 01638 528 010.

For any food safety questions or concerns, contact the public health office at 226-8777 or 01638 528 777.
