What's your favourite British T.V. Show?

Of course, paws and television remotes don't go hand-in-hand. I've tried sitting on the remote and pouncing on it but I prefer to let someone else do the hard work for me. The truth is, I sleep through most of what comes on the television, but I am rather partial to Doctor Who, the most recent series in particular. Everything stops in our house when it's Dr. Who on the telly - especially Christmas Day when there is always a Dr. Who Special awaited by the entire nation with baited breath.

The first episodes of Dr.Who were back in 1963, preceding even the first moon landings, when the prospect of space travel was eagerly anticipated. It's a science-fiction series, produced and screened by the British Broadcasting Corporation on their BBC One channel from 1963 to 1989 in its original form, with a new series launched in early 2005. That's when a whole new generation became obsessed with the time-travelling Time Lord, The Doctor, his intrepid companions and the weird array of monsters and aliens they encounter as they careen through time and space in the Tardis (Time and Relative Dimensions In Space), which looks suspiciously like an old-fashioned police box. I have taken a particular interest in the ninth series with the introduction of Cat People. The Sisters of Plenitude are Cat People who work in a hospital on a peninsula near the future city of New New York. ( Yes - there are two 'News). This is by no means weird in The Doctor's universe.

You have to watch the programme for quite a while to get the feel of it and understand some of the strange concepts involved, but once you get on the wavelength, it's addictive. Some of Britain's best actors and actresses are queuing up for parts in Dr. Who, such is its popularity. It's part of the national psyche - a national treasure, not unlike myself...
