48th to celebrate 60 years at RAF Lakenheath Published Nov. 7, 2008 By Staff Sgt. Nathan Gallahan 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- The U.S. Air Force will be celebrating sixty years here Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. with a "Night at the museum" themed celebration at Eagles Landing, which is the officer's club here. The event will last approximately three hours and will "showcase RAF Lakenheath's and the 48th Fighter Wing's history from the time the base was an RAF station to the present day," said Bill Harris, 48th FW Historian. "[The event will include] hundreds of artifacts, exhibits, and memorabilia from the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, and the 48th Fighter Wing's history office," he said. "Several British and American living legends will also be present in period uniform to give historic overviews of Lakenheath's history and the history of British-American relations over the past 60 years." The history of U.S. forces here dates back to when the 7460th Base Complement Squadron was activated Nov. 27, 1948 but base leadership decided to hold the celebration earlier so that it wouldn't interfere with Thanksgiving holiday festivities. Anybody wanting to attend should contact their first sergeant to purchase a ticket before Nov. 10. This event is open to all RAF Lakenheath military, Department of Defense employees, Ministry of Defence employees and their guests (with limited availability.)
