(Editor's note: This is the second part of a three-part series on the successful Air Traffic System Evaluation Program inspection.)

The 48th Operations Support Squadron was recently inspected by an Air Traffic System Evaluation Program team and boasted a successful outcome.

"The ATSEP inspection is our gauge or measurement of how well we do our job," said Capt. Vilachack Ladara, 48th OSS airfield operations flight commander. "We prep all the time, even though we're inspected every two years."

He said they are constantly tweaking procedures to match new guidance that comes down.

The inspectors look at airfield management, the air traffic control tower and radar approach control, and the ability of these agencies to provide quality and safety to their customers in the local flying community. Affected aircrew are from RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and even aircraft landing and departing from the London area.

"We know we do a good job," said Chief Master Sgt. Joseph Ryan, 48th OSS RAPCON chief controller. "This inspection is just a validation that we do it right every day."

The chief said although it's his and the airfield operations staff's job to provide the right equipment and procedures, it's really up to the sergeants and Airmen to use those tools to the max effect.

In an environment where mistakes could cost lives, there is no small part to play.

"Everyone played a role," Capt. Ladara said. "From the lowest-ranking Airman to the chief, they all worked extra hard to get a 98 percent compliance rate. It felt great to achieve that."
