Harlem Globetrotter legend “Curly Neal” tours USAFE bases Published Aug. 15, 2008 By USAFE Services marketing HQ USAFE SERVICES - RAMSTEIN AB GE -- Harlem Globetrotter legend, Curly Neal, will tour USAFE bases August 16 to 23 promoting the annual USAFE Services Extreme Summer program. Neal visits the following USAFE bases during his tour: Aug 16 RAF Lakenheath, England Aug 17 RAF Mildenhall, England Aug 19 Stavanger, Norway Aug 21 Izmir, Turkey Aug 23 Incirlik, Turkey A truly magical dribbler and shooter, Curly Neal captured the imagination of fans all over the world with his infectious smile and clean- head. He played for the Harlem Globetrotters for 22 years (1963-1985), during which he traveled millions of miles, performed in 97 countries and completed more than 6,000 basketball games. Neal was always known for his outstanding ball-handling ability and dribbling wizardry, but his exhibitions prove he may very well be one of the purest shooters ever to play the game. He had a knack for hitting shots from beyond the mid-court mark. After an outstanding career at Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, Neal moved on to John C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he averaged 23.1 points per game and led his team to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association title his senior year. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and became a Globetrotter in 1963. Neal received the Globetrotters "Legends" ring on June 25, 1993. Curly is no stranger to television, having made numerous appearances on the Nickelodeon Network, Comic Strip Live, Totally Hidden Videos, Entertainment Tonight, MTV, NBA Inside Stuff, NBA Stay in School Jam and the 1992 NBA All-Star Game pre-game show. He has also made special appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, Good Morning America and PM Magazine. Neal played a starring role as Supertrotter on The Harlem Globetrotters Popcorn Machine, a television series which aired from 1973 to 1974. Neal has also appeared in numerous television commercials and print ads throughout his career. During the 1991-92 NBA season, Curly played a starring role in the NBA's "Stay in School" program. This program was seen by over 50,000 students in the Central Florida area. Since retiring from the Globetrotters, he has made numerous personal appearances throughout the world. Curly puts on a fun and interactive demonstration that excites kids and adults alike including spinning contests and the "Magic Circle". He enjoys sending a positive message for our country's youth and continually stresses the importance of teachers, education and respect for parents. An avid golfer in his spare time, Curly is a member of the Celebrity Golf Association and plays in charitable golf tournaments throughout the country. The father of five children, Curly and his wife Rose reside in Florida.
