Diagnostic and recertification students from Suffolk New College spent the afternoon touring the vehicle maintenance section of the 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron, Jan. 20, to see exactly what it would be like to work on American cars if they apply to work in the unit after graduation.

"We've been touring local students annually as a recruiting method that not only keeps us in touch with the colleges, but provides an amazing opportunity," said Robin Wallis, 48th LRS vehicle manager. "We've done this program for eight years and have recruited at least 10 mechanics from it."

The 24 U.K. students observed an array of military automotive services provided at RAF Lakenheath and had the opportunity to meet with someone who was once in their shoes.

"Going on the tour when I was younger was what made me decide to apply for a job on base," said Mark Hayes, 48th LRS heavy mobile equipment mechanic leader. "Though it was difficult to get used to, I think it was a great experience for me working with Airmen and gaining knowledge different from most local mechanics."

The eye-opening tour not only educated the 17-to 25-year-old future mechanics, but also brought shed light on career opportunities.

"Today I learned how clean, efficient and professional everything has to be in a successful shop like this one," said Max Stuttle, a 20-year-old student. "I definitely see myself applying for a position here."
