Media Advisory: Media invited to RAF Lakeneheath Water Survival Training Published June 10, 2014 By Staff Reports 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 48 FW/PA POC | SSgt Thomas Trower Release # | 140503 Date | May 20, 2014 U.S. fighter jet aircrew will undergo Water Survival Training held by U.S. Air Force survival training experts at the Lowestoft College pool in Lowestoft, Suffolk, Thursday, May 22. Media are invited to observe the training and speak with instructors and students. The training will begin at 9 a.m. and last until approximately 1 p.m. Interviews will be available after training is complete. All aircrew must be trained to handle water survival conditions when operating over a body of water. The conditions presented in this specialized facility show Airmen how to survive in harsh water conditions off the coast of England and around the world. Weather conditions over the water sometimes causes pilots to adjust their training flight so that it takes place in airspace over land, which ultimately leads to an increase in aircraft noise sometimes heard by UK communities. We comply with all U.K. airspace regulations and make every effort to minimize any noise impact to the communities. Come and see first-hand the realities of what aircrew would face if they had to put their water-survival skills to the test in raging waters off the coast of the UK. The training includes parachute entanglement training, canopy drag training, life raft operations, survival knowledge training and personnel recovery training in a pool capable of creating waves that are 4 feet high.
