Airmen from the 493rd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron here had the distinct honor and pleasure of hosting 40 Senior Noncommissioned Officers from all branches of the Lithuanian military.

Among the visiting SNCOs was the Sergeant Major of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Sgt. Maj. Saulius Baldauskus. Sgt. Maj. Baldauskas provided a briefing to the American Airmen detailing the history of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and their rank structure. Master Sgt. Brian Cain, 493rd Force Protection NCO, provided a briefing on what it takes to be a SNCO in the U.S. Air Force. Master Sgt. Greg Bianchi, 493rd Weather, provided an F-15 Eagle capabilities briefing and relayed the importance of the U.S.'s role in NATO Baltic Air Policing operations. He emphasized the Grim Reapers' dedication to executing the mission and maintaining the security of our NATO allies.

The Lithuanians were given an up close look at an F-15 following the formal presentations. They were also given an opportunity look at some of our aircrew flight equipment. Master Sgt. Miguel Tafoya demonstrated night vision capabilities, as well as the rest of the equipment utilized by American flight crews.

The visitors were very impressed by the responsibility and knowledge possessed by our Airmen at every level. The Lithuanians have had opportunities to attend the U.S. Army's Sergeant Major Academy as well. Sgt. Maj. Baldauskas shared his admiration for the strong traditions of our U.S. Army counterparts. They are hoping to send one SNCO to the USAF SNCO Academy in the coming year.

The event culminated in an American-style barbeque. Preparation of the food was shared by both Americans and Lithuanians. There was plenty of opportunity to mingle during dinner. Sgt. Maj. Baldauskas said that events like this are important to help strengthen friendship, especially when the visiting nation shows such dedication to the mission.
