QUERY:

If you don't mind me asking, how come RAF Lakenheath doesn't have any adoption seminars like those held in Germany? I believe this site helps not just military families, but other people that are considering adoption. Since RAF Lakenheath is the biggest Air Force base in the United Kingdom, I'm sure that there would be people interested in going to a seminar like this.

The link http://www.usadopteurope.com/ is what is usually held in Germany. But not everyone can go to Germany to attend this seminar, maybe due to money or the distance.

Please let me know what you think. Thank you.

RESPONSE:

Thank you for your interest. Our Family Advocacy office here at RAF Lakenheath has hosted adoption educational events in the past. Unfortunately we had very limited interest. As a result, we are not currently offering any adoption educational events on base. However, the Family Advocacy office can provide a list of off-base adoption support groups in the Mildenhall-Lakenheath area and they can be reached at DSN 226-8070.

We recognize that adoption can be an item of interest, and we're committed to ensuring our Liberty Airmen and their families have access to options available on adopting a child, though. For those interested in pursuing adoption here in the UK, there are a few opportunities, including:

-- US Adopt Europe.
This is an independent volunteer organization who serves U.S. military personnel throughout Europe. The best way to reach them is via Web at, www.USadopteurope.com. They sponsor a yearly symposium and are available to contact for any adoption related questions or enquiries. Their website also provides a number of resources from the US Department of State and Immigration Services to facilitate an international adoption.

-- Suffolk County Council.
They have an adoption information Web site that addresses most local issues in detail (http://www.suffolk.gov.uk/CareAndHealth/FosteringAndAdoption/Adoption)

-- Family Advocacy office recommends also looking at the European Adoption Symposium's Web site (http://www.europeanadoptionssymposium.com)
(Please note access to it from government computers is blocked).
