The RAF Lakenheath Legal Office provides professional legal support and advice to command and other staff agencies on a variety of issues including military justice, contracts, labor, environmental and operations law.

We also provide legal advice and assistance on personal and civil matters to active duty, retirees, eligible civilians and their families; members of the Guard (Title 10 status only); and Reserve members on active duty orders.

The Legal Office is supported by military attorneys, paralegals and civilians. Using this Web site is not a substitute for consulting with an attorney about a specific legal problem you may have.

Legal assistance and claims assistance can be obtained at the Legal Office located in Building 1082. The legal office is not conducting in-person Article 137, UCMJ, briefings until further notice. If you are reenlisting, please email us at 48fw.ja@us.af.mil to request the briefing materials.

Claims 
The DD Form 1840/1840R (pink form) must be submitted to the carrier within 75 days after delivery of a household goods shipment. This process can now be done online at https://claims.jag.af.mil. The online process only applies to Air Force sponsored moves. Members not able to file online may bring their pink forms to the claims office during normal office hours.

Other claims assistance may be obtained by calling our office.

Ethics 
DoD employees shall not engage in any personal or professional activity that places them in a position of conflict between their private interests and the public interest of the United States.  From commercial solicitation, gift acceptance, off-duty employment to post government employment, if you have any question regarding standards of conduct for a DoD personnel, please consult the legal office for an opinion.

General advice 
General legal advice is available by appointment only during legal assistance times, which are Tuesdays 9:00am -11:00am and Thursdays 1:00 – 3:00pm. Please call 01638- 52-3553 or DSN 226-3553 to book an appointment.

Legal assistance attorneys cannot represent you in court. Further, legal assistance is prohibited in the following areas:
- Issues involving personal commercial enterprises
- Criminal issues under the Uniform Code of Military Justice or state/federal criminal law. (Contact the Area Defense Counsel at 01638 523608 or DSN 226-3608 for assistance.)
- Standards of Conduct issues
- Law of Armed Conflict issues
- Official matters in which the U.S. Air Force has an interest or is involved in the final outcome

Victim Witness Assistance Program (VWAP)

The International Law section of the Legal Office deals with issues between international partners as well as managing cases involving U.S. personnel that take place in the British criminal justice system. Whether it is a traffic ticket you have received off base or an agreement between international partners, be sure to speak to us!

Guide to the UK - Frequently Asked Questions

The Military Justice Division provides guidance to commanders on nonjudicial punishment proceedings and courts-martial. Contact 01638 525204 or DSN 226-5204 for assistance.

The Area Defense Counsel (ADC) program provides independent legal representation to military members suspected of an offense or facing adverse administrative actions. Please contact the ADC at 01638 523608 or DSN 226-3608.

The Operations Law section generally refers to legal rules applicable in actual military operations. It is normally defined as that body of domestic, foreign and international law that impacts the activities of U. S. Armed Forces in war and operations other than war. 

Commanders must ensure their personnel are trained to comply with the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC). All military personnel must accomplish this training every 20 months.

Sexual Assault Prevention & Response Office (SAPRO) 
The Department of Defense does not tolerate sexual assault and has implemented a comprehensive policy that reinforces a culture of prevention, response and accountability that ensures the safety, dignity and well-being of all members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
